FSCE English & Comprehension
English questions often include reading comprehension, vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms and grammar. Success depends on reading carefully and understanding exactly what the writer is saying.
When answering comprehension questions, always read the passage first before looking at the questions. Go back to the text to find evidence rather than relying on memory. The answer is usually hidden somewhere in the passage.
For synonym and antonym questions, think of your own answer before looking at the choices. This helps avoid being distracted by similar-looking words. If you do not know a word, try putting it into a sentence and thinking about its meaning from the context.
Building vocabulary takes time, so regular reading is one of the best forms of preparation. Encourage reading across different genres including stories, information books and newspapers. Keeping a notebook of new words and their meanings can also be very effective.
Practise summarising paragraphs in your own words to improve understanding and inference skills. Discuss what characters are thinking, why events happen and what clues the author provides.
In the exam, answer only what the question asks and avoid making assumptions that are not supported by the text. If there is no penalty for guessing, always make your best attempt. Strong reading habits and regular vocabulary practice will steadily improve performance in every English section of the 11+ examination.
