Let us help you on your journey to FSCE 11+ success

There’s no doubt about it, it’s tricky stuff and a journey full of highs and lows.

Preparing for the 11+ can feel challenging for both children and parents, but the right approach can make a big difference. With regular practice, good exam technique, and the right preparation, children can build the confidence and skills they need to perform at their best.

By practising regularly, learning how to manage time effectively, and approaching the exam with a calm and positive mindset, children can feel more comfortable and ready on the day of the test.

Here are some practical hints and tips to help make your journey a little smoother.

Little and often

Short, regular practice sessions are usually more effective than long periods of study. Creating a quiet environment, encouraging positive effort, and celebrating progress can help children build confidence and stay motivated. Slow and steady wins the race!

Keep things positive

No matter how tough your child has found a topic or session, try to stay positive. Turn anything they’re finding tricky into a positive learning opportunity.

Know your times tables

Times tables underpin all maths. Solid skills here will make studying for the maths components of the exam so much easier.

Read widely

The ‘classics’ are perfect practice; think Black Beauty, Anne of Green Gables, The Secret Garden, The Wind in the Willows. These help to build a wide vocabulary and perfect inference skills.

Time Management in the 11+

Time management is an important skill in the 11+. Encourage your child to work at a steady pace and avoid spending too long on any one question. If they are unsure, it’s often best to move on and return to it later if time allows.

Know how to answer

Children will need to answer exactly as they’re instructed to, or risk not gaining the mark. So, if they’re asked to answer in capital letters they must do so.

FSCE often prepare instructions via a voice recording that’s played to students at the beginning of each section of the exam. You may find an example of this on your chosen school’s website so it’s a good idea to play this to your child in advance if you can.

Perfect exam technique

It’s normal to come across questions that feel difficult. If this happens, encourage your child to stay calm, skip the question, and continue with the rest of the paper. Coming back to it later with a fresh mind can often make it easier to solve.

Regularly practising under timed conditions helps children become familiar with the pace and structure of the 11+ exam. Encourage your child to read each question carefully, move on if they get stuck, and return to harder questions at the end if time allows.

Many marks are lost through simple mistakes such as rushing, misreading a question, or not checking answers. Remind your child to take their time, read each question carefully, and check their work if time allows at the end.

Staying Calm on Exam Day

Feeling nervous before an exam is completely normal. A good night’s sleep, arriving early, and taking a few slow breaths before starting can help children settle their nerves and focus on doing their best.

As the exam draws near it’s helpful for your child to know what to expect.  Avoiding nerves getting the better of them is crucial. The better prepared they are the less likely this is to happen.

The Night Before the 11+ Exam

The night before the exam should be calm and relaxed. Avoid introducing any new topics or heavy revision at this stage. Instead, encourage your child to relax, get everything ready for the morning, and focus on getting a good night’s sleep.

A healthy meal, a positive conversation about doing their best, and an early bedtime can help your child feel rested and confident. Remind them that the exam is simply an opportunity to show what they have learned, and that staying calm and focused will help them perform at their best.
