Introduction

Mathematics is a key component of the FSCE 11+ entrance examinations, testing not only numerical ability but also logical thinking and problem-solving skills. At Practice Makes Perfect, we encourage children to develop confidence through regular practice, strong number knowledge and effective exam techniques. With the right preparation, every child can improve their mathematical ability and approach the exam with confidence.

The FSCE entrance exams usually test maths skills across two separate papers - written answers and multiple choice, all covering the Year 5 national curriculum. Our practice papers are structured for realistic practice and effective skill strengthening.

Top Tips

  • Read every question carefully before starting

  • Underline important numbers and keywords

  • Learn times tables and number bonds until they become automatic. This significantly speeds your child up when the clock is ticking.

  • Revise key mathematical facts so that they’re second nature

  • Check your answers if time allows

  • Writing down calculations helps reduce mistakes and improves problem-solving skills. Be careful to only do this on your question sheets and not on your answer sheets

  • Become familiar with how to answer using our practice papers. For written answers it is usually one digit per answer box and for multiple choice they’ll be required the select their response by shading the oval of their chosen answer

  • Practice listening to audio instructions - students must strictly follow these on the day of the exam. These will guide your child through their exam section by section, including what that section covers, any relevant examples and important timings.

Practice Strategies

  • Short daily practice sessions are far more effective than occasional long revision days

  • Complete ten minutes of mental arithmetic every day

  • Revise fractions, decimals and percentages regularly. Know key mathematical facts off by heart -for example angles and conversion facts

  • Practise solving multi-step word problems

  • Complete timed practice papers to improve speed and accuracy

  • Review mistakes and learn from them.

Common Mistakes to Avoid ‍

  • Rushing and misreading the question

  • Forgetting to convert units of measurement where appropriate

  • Using the wrong mathematical operation

  • Leaving difficult questions unanswered instead of returning later

  • Not checking calculations.
