F‍SCE 11+ English & Comprehension

Comprehension, Vocabulary, Synonyms & Antonyms

The English component of the FSCE 11+ entrance exams will usually include a reading comprehension and will likely test vocabulary understanding through a variety of synonyms and antonyms questions. Children may be asked to identify synonyms, antonyms, infer meaning from a passage or answer questions about what they have read.

At Practice Makes Perfect, we encourage pupils to become confident readers who can analyse text carefully and understand the meaning behind words and phrases.

Reading Strategies

·       Highlight important information.

·       Return to the passage to find evidence.

·       Read every answer carefully before choosing.

·       Think about the author’s meaning rather than making assumptions.

·       Read widely across a wide variety of genres to build vocabulary naturally.‍ ‍

Frequently Asked Questions

How can my child improve comprehension?

Reading every day and discussing the text helps develop understanding and inference skills. Questions that rely on inference skills test children’s ability to "read between the lines" rather than simply find information in the text. Encourage your child to look for clues in the passage and use evidence to work out what the author is implying, rather than what is directly stated.

How can vocabulary be improved?

Keep a notebook of new words, read widely and practise using new vocabulary in conversation and writing.

What is the best exam technique for comprehension?

Always return to the passage and find evidence for your answer rather than relying on memory or assumptions.

At Practice Makes Perfect, we believe that regular practice, expert guidance and a positive attitude are the keys to success in the FSCE 11+ examination. With consistent preparation and the right support, every child can improve their confidence and achieve their full potential.
