FSCE 11+ Missing Letters

Missing Letters questions test spelling, vocabulary and your ability to recognise patterns in words. They reward pupils who read regularly and notice common letter combinations.

Start by looking at the letters that are already given. They often provide strong clues to the missing section of the word. Saying the word aloud can also help you hear the sounds and identify the missing letters.

Look for familiar patterns such as ch, sh, th, ee, oo, ai and ea. Many English words also contain common beginnings like un-, re- and pre-, or endings such as -ing, -ed and -ful. Spotting these patterns quickly can save time.

If several answers are available, eliminate any that do not make a real word. This improves your chances even if you are uncertain.

One of the best ways to improve is simply to read more. Books, magazines and newspapers all introduce new vocabulary and improve spelling naturally. You can also practise by covering letters in everyday words and guessing what is missing.

During the exam, do not panic if one word seems impossible. Skip it and come back later with fresh eyes. Careful observation and a wide vocabulary are the keys to success.
